Materials & Makers

Every Selah & Seed piece begins with a natural fabric and a maker's hands.

The fabrics we choose

We work with natural, breathable fabrics selected for quality, comfort and longevity:

  • Organic cotton — soft, breathable and gentle on skin, including little ones'.

  • Handspun khadi cotton — Khadi is handspun, handwoven fabric — lighter, softer and more breathable than machine-made cotton, with a beautiful textural character. With the right care, khadi softens beautifully with age. It's one of our signature fabrics.

  • Handwoven cotton — woven by hand on traditional looms.

  • Natural linen — a timeless, breathable natural fibre.

  • Peace (ahimsa) silk — silk harvested without harming the moth, allowing the silkworm to complete its lifecycle.

Our fabrics are pre-shrunk during finishing, so your garment keeps its shape with proper care. The majority of our products involve handspun natural fibers like cotton and linen. Additionally, we use wild silk fabric, also known as peace silk or ahimsa silk, which is produced without harming the pupae inside the cocoons, ensuring no sacrifice of animal life. Our products embrace artisanal crafts with handloom and handprinted techniques, requiring minimal energy—unlike mechanized industries that use 132 tons of coal yearly for fabric weaving, whereas we use none. Furthermore, by prioritizing natural fabric forms, we reduce water consumption, limiting dyeing processes that typically waste water. Our use of azo-free dyes minimizes chemicals and drastically cuts down water wastage in the environment. In our chemical management, the dyeing stage is the primary process involving chemicals. While we currently use low-impact dyes, our focus is on establishing a wastewater management system. Additionally, we're exploring alternative natural dye processes for sustainability. As for pollution reduction, our textiles' entire lifecycle, from fiber procurement to hand spinning, yarn-making, and hand weaving, minimizes environmental impact significantly. Our work with textiles naturally leads to minimal wastage. Regarding our use of low-impact dyes, we're actively developing a wastewater management system. Additionally, we've initiated exploration into alternative natural dyeing processes. Our primary crafts involve handspun and handwoven khadi, as well as the Jamdani technique. These methods significantly benefit the weaving community and the environment by creating jobs, empowering artisans, conserving water, and reducing carbon footprint.

Made to order, made to last

Every piece is made to order — we cut nothing until it's chosen. This means less waste, no dead stock, and garments made with intention rather than volume. Making takes time: most orders are completed and delivered in 3–4 weeks.

Our makers

We partner with skilled artisans in India (West Bengal, Odisha and Assam) and other countries to create beautifully crafted collections that honour people and preserve traditional craftsmanship. Handcraft means small variations in texture, colour, weave and finish — these are the marks of a garment made by human hands, not machines.

Our promise

Selah & Seed is an Australian, women-owned brand. We are committed to ethical employment, and every purchase supports charitable donations (10% of all profits).
